Let's Talk: Relationships tied to health

Greetings!

For this weeks blog post let's talk about how the quality of your relationships effect the quality of your life.

Harvard conducted a study that started in 193, it followed 268 male students throughout their lives and measured their health. They found a link between the quality of their relationship; to not only their health but overall quality of their life. The study found that six factors can determine ones life trajectory by age 30 and that the satisfaction of ones relationship by age 50 determined their health at age 80. Those six factors are:

  • Physical activity
  • Habits
  • Demeanor
  • Healthy weight
  • Stable marriage

The study goes on to explain that those who have more and better relationships have better support system and guidance. They tend to eat better, be more physically active, not smoke or abuse alcohol and have better way to cope with difficulties of life.

Harvard used be an only-mens school when the study started but have later on expanded the study to include wives and children. They found that men lived longer if they had a stable marriage and that loneliness has as much of an effect as smoking or alcoholism.

So maybe its time to call up some friends and hang out for a while, its self-care.
