Let's Talk: Vitamin D deficiency

 Greetings!

For this weeks topic lets talk about vitamin D deficiency.

As winter is coming to its end many people are exited about warmer weather, and seeing the sun again. The Sun is needed to generate vitamin D from the skin and while other sources can supplement vitamin D, it isn't as Ideal.

What is Vitamin D deficiency and how does it present.

Vitamin D is produced in the body when one is exposed to UV. Vitamin D is essential to absorb calcium which makes up ones bones. The amount of vitamin D depends on age but the average adult from 19-70 year olds need about 600IU. Few causes for deficiency are not getting enough sun exposure, insufficiency in diet and liver/kidney problems that is unable to fully convert vitamin D that is usable for the body. Certain medication can also alter conversion of vitamin D.

Signs and symptoms of deficiency:

- Muscle pain/tremors

- Bone pain/brittle bones

- Fatigue/weakness

- Depression

How can you treat vitamin D deficiency:

It is recommended to get a blood test done before taking supplements, however exposure to more sunlight is recommended, 15-20 min in mid day sun is generally enough, if one has more pigment in the skin adding another 5-10 minutes are recommended. Altering your diet to consume more Fatty fish, mushrooms and egg yolk will also help. Supplements are available and should be taken if a doctor states such.
