Let's Talk: Tourette Syndrome
Greetings!
For this weeks topic, let's talk about Tourette Syndrome, Why? Because my brother is diagnosed with it and even though I have known it since he was born I have never really researched it.
What is it?
Tourettes Syndrome is a neurological disorder. The symptoms can include uncontrollable rapid and movements/sounds. It mostly effect males but females get it too. The symptoms generally start in childhood and have the potential to get better with age although that is not the case for everyone.
Different people have different triggers however anxiety and excitement can worsen the movements/vocal also known as Tics.
There are also many different co-morbidities that are linked to Tourettes Syndrome, disorders such as:
- ADHD
- Anxiety
- Sensory disorders
- OCD
The cause of the disorder is not fully know, but it is thought to have both environmental and genetic causes.
The diagnosis happens in childhood and there are currently no cures, doctors mostly treat symptoms as they come and prioritize a well balanced lifestyle.
